Animal Testing

The true horror of animal testing seems to be masked from the public. Animals under any circumstances, deserve to be protected from being tested on or suffer in any shape or form. However, still millions of rodents, mammals and primates endure experiments and tests as they await their painful death from cages. Why would humans even allow their morals to undertake such a dreadful act of killing?

Animal research has said to have played a vital role in medical and cosmetic research. Many hospital surgeries have been completed on lab animals before being trialled in a real life situation. In many people’s eyes, animal testing is the way forward and we need to test animals for the future. Many diseases have been able to be cured are treated thanks to animal testing; however, we are able to continue with research without harming lives.

If, like me, you are asking yourself the justified question, “Why test on animals, why allow suffering?”, there are immediate responses. Humans believe that they have the right to use animals as they wish, just because of the intelligence hierarchy. Humans have rights which should be abided by with no exception, it is the same for animals. Rights for animals are simply ignored by millions and millions of humans each and every day. We have a right to protect the environment, but instead, we destruct and reduce its natural beauty.

Animals are an easy, cheap and speedy way to test products, chemicals, food and even drugs.  These items are so harmful to animals that most die a short life, which has included nothing more than captivity and utter pain and fear. Medical science also holds responsibility for dissecting and experimenting on animals, when many other methods are available. Technology has improved modern science massively and helps to even save the lives of innocent animals. Virtual trials and databases, as well as computer simulations and models, help to test and experiment instead of using living victims. Human tissues can be tested and experiments can be completed on humans, which are harmless are more effective. Organs-on-chips are a new ingenious invention which acts like human organs, helping to treat diseases. Tissue models can test skin allergies, without harming animals in a lab. Overall, humans can be more efficiently tested and researched. If we are experimenting with cures or treatments why not uses a tissue model or some of the willing volunteers. Most experiments on humans would be harmless and we are finding new ways to test without consequences.

Virtual trials and databases, as well as computer simulations and models, help to test and experiment instead of using living victims. Generally, computerised methods work perfectly for many experiments and tests we complete.

Other methods can involve human tissues, which can be tested and experimented. Organs-on-chips are a new ingenious invention, which acts like human organs, helping to treat diseases. Monetary implications are a major downfall in the use of the products, but these methods don’t harm organism and work more efficiently. All that needs to be done is a sway in the Government decisions. If we push the Government to understand the atrocities of animal testing, our problems could be solved.

As always every single individual has a chance to do something to help. More and more companies (and people in general) are noticing how harrowing animal testing really is. This is a perfect opportunity for people to buy cruelty-free products, as brands are understanding the pointlessness of cosmetic testing. Many major brands, like the body shop, are reverting to cruelty-free products and have been educating and protesting against it. The Government needs to be pushed to stop funding animal cruelty products and the testing in labs that takes place daily. Charities can also be donated towards and general education should be spread around the globe.

Together we can combat these issues

PETA is a great resource of further information if you are looking to help.

Nice site dear Tilly, a question though-would you ever consider testing using animals to be acceptable-perhaps in the final state of life saving medical trials?.
    Also some nice pics.

    1. Of course life saving medical trials are extremely important. However, we are so lucky to live in such an advanced world, this means we have chance to change and make a positive impact before it is too late. This includes animal testing, we have so many more options, options we can use to save lives.
So in answer to your question, no I don’t believe we should test on animals for life saving options. Not because I don’t want to save humans and prevent diseases, but simply because we have more effective options.
